    Biodiversity and distribution of cyanobacteria at Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica.The current study describes the biodiversity and distribution of cyanobacteria from the natural habitats of Schirmacher land, East Antarctica surveyed during 23rd Indian Antarctic Expedition (2003�2004). Cyanobacteria were mapped using the Global Positioning System (GPS). A total of 109 species (91 species were non-heterocystous and 18 species were heterocystous) from 30 genera and 9 families were recorded; 67, 86 and 14 species of cyanobacteria were identified at altitudes of sea level >100 m, 101�150 m and 398�461 m, respectively. The relative frequency and relative density of cyanobacterial populations in the microbial mats showed that 11 species from 8 genera were abundant and 6 species (Phormidium angustissimum, P. tenue, P. uncinatum Schizothrix vaginata, Nostoc kihlmanii and Plectonema terebrans) could be considered as dominant species in the study area.Biodiversidad y distribución de las cianobacterias de Dronning Maud Land, Antártida Oriental. En este estudio se describe la biodiversidad y distribución de las cianobacterias presentes en los hábitats naturales de Schirmacher, Antártida Oriental, muestreados durante la 23ª Expedición India a la Antártida (2003-2004). Las muestras de cianobacterias fueron georreferenciadas mediante un GPS. Se identificaron 109 especies (91 no heterocistadas y 18 provistas de heterocistes) de 30 géneros y 9 familias; en los tramos de altitud sobre el nivel del mar >100 m, 101-150 m y 398-461 m se detectaron 67, 86 y 14 especies, respectivamente. La frecuencia y densidad relativas de las poblaciones de cianobacterias en los tapices microbianos mostraron que 11 especies de 8 géneros eran abundantes y que 6 especies (Phormidium angustissimum, P. tenue, P. uncinatum, Schizothrix vaginata, Nostoc kihlmanii y Plectonema terebrans) se pueden considerar como dominantes en el área de estudio

    Small Farm Goat Production in Semi-Arid Region of Uttar Pradesh

    Majority of selected goat farmers were landless and marginal (69%) with an annual average income of Rs.I9200.00. However, average income of small and medium goat farmers were about Rs.25500.00.Ownership pattern of goats revealed that about 78% goats were owned by the landless and marginal farmers. Majority of the farmers had Barbari/Barbari type goats (54%) followed by non-descript (43%) and Sirohi type goats (3%). Furthermore, 69 per cent goat houses were of Kaccha type and 49 per cent of selected respondent availed private veterinary services for their goats however, 40 percent of the goat farmers used home remedies. Merely, 11 per cent of the respondents visited government veterinary hospitals Though, poor socio-economic status cannot be ignore for the goat improvement in study village, some policy support is imperative to encourage goat farmers for their overall development

    Ras signaling enhances the activity of C/EBPalpha to induce granulocytic differentiation by phosphorylation of serine 248

    The transcription factor C/EBPa regulates early steps of normal granulocyte differentiation since mice with a disruption of the C/EBPa gene do not express detectable levels of the G-CSF receptor and produce no neutrophils. We have recently shown that C/EBPa function is also impaired in acute myeloid leukemias. However, how the transcriptional activity of C/EBPa is regulated both in myelopoiesis and leukemogenesis, is not fully understood. The current study demonstrates that activated Ras enhances the ability of C/EBPa to transactivate the G-CSF receptor promoter and a minimal promoter containing only C/EBP DNA binding sites. Ras signaling activates C/EBPa via the transactivation domain, because it enhances the transactivation function of a fusion protein containing a Gal4 DNA binding domain and the C/EBPa transactivation domain, and does not change C/EBPa DNA binding. Ras acts on serine 248 of the C/EBPa transactivation domain, as it does not enhance the transactivation function of a C/EBPa serine 248 to alanine point mutant. Interestingly, serine 248 of C/EBPa is a PKC consensus site, and a PKC inhibitor blocks the activation of C/EBPa by Ras. Ras signaling phosphorylates C/EBPa on serine 248 in vivo. Finally, mutation of serine 248 to alanine obviates the ability of C/EBPa to induce granulocytic differentiation. These data suggest a model where Ras signaling enhances the activity of C/EBPa to induce granulocytic differentiation by phosphorylation of serine 248

    This theses presents the synthesis and characterization of Cd(II)-, Pb(II)- and Hg(II)-aminoethanethiolates in aqueous media. 2-Aminoethanethiolate, a versatile sulfur andnitrogen (S/N) based ligand was used due to its resemblance to the naturally occurringamino acid, cysteine. The work is presented in four major parts: first, backgroundinformation on the versatile structural chemistry of Cd, Pb and Hg-thiolates with S/Ncontaining ligands; second, synthesis and characterization of Cd(II) with 2-aminoethanethiolates; third, synthesis and characterization and structural chemistry ofPb(II) with 2-aminoethanethiolates; and fourth, synthesis and characterization of Hg(II)-2-aminoethanethiolates in solution- and solid-state with emphasis on the mechanisticpathways for the formation of clusters.The compounds reported here are synthesized by direct addition of the metal saltsand the ligand in deionized water. For Cd(II)-thiolates, insoluble products (77 - 80 and 82- 84) due to the formation of oligomers and polymers were obtained. In Pb(II)-thiolates(85 - 89), the structural chemistry is variable due to the extensive array of coordinationenvironments Pb can acquire. This can be related to the stoichiometry of the reaction aswell as the reaction conditions. The structural trends in Cd(II)- and Pb(II)-thiolates arenot observed in the Hg(II)-thiolates. Rather the halide influences the formation ofmolecular as well as non-molecular structures. Systematic pathways for the formation ofthe compounds based on a variety of commonly observed structural \u27building blocks\u27 arepresented. For Cl, Br derivatives, a four-coordinate intermediate, [Hg(SR)2X2] (88 - 96)and for I derivatives three-coordinate intermediates, [HgI(SR)2] and [HgI2(SR)] (97 -100) can be considered as building units. The compounds were characterized withIR/Raman, NMR, MS, Uv-Vis and X-ray crystallography
